Accessibility Guide

The Old Coach House holds a rich history that dates back to the 1750s. Nestled on the side of a hill, this ancient building has undergone a thoughtful conversion to create a unique holiday destination. We value inclusivity and aspire to welcome guests from all walks of life. However, due to the inherent limitations of the historical structure, we regretfully acknowledge that the property is not fully accessible to individuals with disabilities, despite our best efforts. 

Pre-Arrival

  • Our website is: ochnettlebridge.co.uk
  • Bookings/enquiries can be made via our website, by email or by telephone.
  • The property is best suited to guests arriving by car as Nettlebridge has no regular bus service and the nearest train stations can be found at Castle Cary (12 miles), Bath (14 miles) or  Bristol (18 miles).
  • Online food shopping for home delivery is available via Waitrose or Tesco.  

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • The entrance to the driveway is marked by a 10' wide wooden gate which can be closed or left open during your stay, whichever you prefer.
  • There is ample car parking for two cars, on the driveway in front of the Old Coach House
  • The driveway is flat and gravelled
  • The front door to The Old Coach House is approached directly from this driveway.
  • Parking can be directly in front of the front door if wished, and luggage can be unloaded there.
  • We may be able to assist with unloading your luggage if help is required - please let us know at the time of booking.
  • The front door is the most accessible entrance (104cm wide) and has a single step 20cm high up into the property from the gravelled driveway.
  • There are two small, solar-powered lights marking the entrance to the gateway, which come on automatically at dusk.  
  • There is a bright motion-sensor LED exterior light which illuminates the front door.

Main Entrance

  • The front door is the most accessible entrance. You step up 20cm and into the property from the gravel driveway over the front door step, which is 15cm deep.
  • The doorway is 104cm wide.
  • Inside the front door is the hallway, measuring 1.74m x 4.53m with flooring laid from original limestone setts which are laid flat, but have a slightly uneven surface due to their age and character.
  • There is level access from the hallway into the snug, utility room and cloakroom.
  • There is access via 3 stone steps, each one 23cm high by 27cm deep up into the kitchen/family room.  There is a handrail to the right hand side of these steps.
  • All doors off the hallway are wooden (oak) and as such have a good contrast between them and the painted surrounds.
  • There is a carpeted staircase which leads up from the hallway to the bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • The hallway is lit with a mix of wall lights and pendant ceiling lights which can be individually controlled to suit your preferences.

Snug

  • The snug has level access from the hallway via a doorway 74cm wide.
  • The snug has modern, level flagstone flooring, with a circular shaggy pile yellow rug in front of the sofa.  Being a yellow rug against a black floor, there is good visual contrast between the two different surfaces.
  • The two-seat sofa and additional tub chair both have arms.  Cushions and a throw are provided for your comfort. The sofa seat is 38cm from the floor, the chair is 45cm from the floor.
  • The 28" flat-screen TV offers over 80 TV channels via Free-Sat.  Music stations can also be accessed from this TV, which also has subtitles and audio description capability.
  • The TV, DVD player and free-sat box are all controlled by remotes

  • The room is lit with a ceiling pendant light
  • There are two windows in this room, enabling plenty of natural light.
  • Their is an additional decorative lamp near the TV and a brighter reading lamp situated next to the single chair for added contrast.

Utility Room

  • The utility room has level access from the hallway via a doorway 74cm wide
  • The flooring in the utility room is flat, modern, grey flagstones
  • There is a standard-size, front-loading washing machine in the utility room
  • There is a cream coloured, floor-standing cabinet containing cleaning materials, with a wooden (oak) worksurface over and a stainless-steel, deep basin with mixer tap.
  • The room is lit with a couple of ceiling pendant lights
  • There is a large window in this room, enabling plenty of natural light.
  • There is an under-stairs cupboard giving storage for the hoover, ironing board and clothes airer, should you wish to use them during your stay.  The doorway into the cupboard is 65cm wide by 140cm high and the cupboard has its own bright LED light.


Cloakroom

  • The cloakroom has level access from the hallway via a doorway 59cm wide
  • The cloakroom is a masterpiece in making the best out of a small space!  It measures 72xm w x 1.40m long.
  • The toilet is a standard-sized model by Armitage Shanks, the seat is 42cm from the ground.
  • The cloakroom is lit by a ceiling pendant light.
  • There is no natural light in the cloakroom.
  • The flooring is of flat, grey modern flagstones.

Kitchen/family room

  • The doorway into the kitchen/family room is 72cm wide
  • There is access via 3 stone steps (each one 23cm high) up into the kitchen/family room. There is a handrail to the right hand side of these steps.
  • This room is flooded with natural light and is a lovely, bright open space.
  • The flooring here is engineered oak floorboards, with a short-pile, mustard-coloured rug under the coffee table, by the 3-seater sofa.
  • The three-seat sofa and additional tub chair both have arms. Cushions and a throw are provided for your comfort.  There is also a beanbag for additional seating.
  • The 32" flat-screen TV offers over 80 TV channels via Free-Sat. Music stations can also be accessed from this TV, which also has subtitles and audio description capability..
  • The TV and free-sat box are both controlled by remotes
  • A selection of cookery books, local walking guides, family board games and jigsaw puzzles for your use, can also be found here.
  • The room is lit by 15 LED spotlights in the ceiling which can be switched on/off in various combinations to provide optimum lighting levels
  • There are two wall lights above the kitchen worksurface
  • The cooker also has overhead lighting for optimum visibility
  • There is a standard lamp by the side of the 3-seated sofa
  • There is seating for 4 people around the dining room table.  The table (surface 1.35m x 90cm), has an under-space of 69cm.  Each chair seat is 42cm from the ground.  None of these chairs have arms.
  • We have a spare chair for use at the dining table, which does have arms; this chair seat is 47cm from the ground.
  • We have a mix of low level and higher kitchen cupboards.  We supply white crockery giving a high colour contrast between them and the worksurface/table top.
  • The crockery is kept in eye-level kitchen cupboards. Storage height of cutlery drawer is 82cm.
    There is an electric Hotpoint cooker, with the hob 92cm high and two ovens.  One fan oven (with shelves around 33cm from the floor) and a smaller oven/grill with shelves at an average height of 67cmThe top oven door drops down, the fan oven door opens sideways.  
    The worksurfaces are grey in colour and 92cm high, with no clear under-space.
    Fridge/freezer: highest shelf in fridge 1.51m, lowest drawer in freezer 13cm from the ground. 
    The kettle, toaster and microwave all sit on top of the worksurfaces, which are 92cm high
  • The stainless steel sink is inset into the worksurface and has a mixer tap. 

  • Colour contrast between walls, floor and furniture is achieved by having walls painted in a light french grey paint, with high gloss teal units, charcoal grey worksurfaces and a wooden (oak) floor.

  • There are patio doors leading out from this room into the garden.  There is a small lip to step over 18cm deep, from the family room  down 19cm onto the stone step outside. then one step (22cm down) before the final step down of 25cm down to the lawn.  There are no handrails for these steps.
    There is level access from the grass to the patio area
    There is one step down, 9cm from the grass and the patio area to the gravel driveway.

Staircase and landing

  • The staircase leads from the hallway to the first floor.
  • The staircase is 89cm wide, with 13 steps, each one 20cm high by 25cm deep, with one quarter-turn in direction.
  • There are handrails to the right hand side going up.
  • The stairs open up to a landing 2.04m x 2.04m, with doors leading off to both bedrooms and the family bathroom.
  • There is a Velux rooflight window giving natural light over the staircase
  • There are wall lights on the staircase and a pendant light on the landing ceiling

Master bedroom

  • There is level access from the landing into the master bedroom via a doorway 74cm wide.
  • Antique-style painted brass double bed (4'6" x 6'3") with both head and footboards, 55cm high, with spaces of 1.20m and 50cm either side.  We use cotton bedding and duvets/pillows are hypoallergenic.
  • Grey carpeted flooring
  • Plenty of unobstructed clear floor space available.
  • Bathroom next door, accessible from the landing.
  • Large window overlooking the garden and a Velux rooflight window above the bed (with blackout blind) letting in plenty of natural light to the bedroom.
  • Vaulted ceiling with a 5-arm chandelier light.
  • Both sides of the bed have bedside tables with bedside lamps on

Twin bedroom

  • There is level access from the landing into the twin bedroom via a doorway 74cm wide.
  • Grey carpeted flooring
  • Wooden, futon bed (3'0" x 6'3") with no head or footboard, 32cm from the ground, with limited space either side.  The shorty high-sleeper bed is  5' 6"long by 2' 6" wide and stands 1.65m tall - accessed via a 4-step, wooden ladder.  We use cotton bedding and all duvets and pillows are hypoallergenic.
  • Large window overlooking the garden letting in plenty of natural light, along with a circular picture window at a high level, near the vaulted ceiling - enabling this bedroom to benefit from natural light from the Velux window above the staircase. 
  • Vaulted ceiling with a pendant light
  • Bedside lamp on the chest of drawers, providing more subtle lighting for the single bed.  LED flexi-light providing lighting for the shorty high-sleeper bed.
  • The ladder to the shorty high-sleeper bed can be removed if bed not in use to allow greater unobstructed floor space. 

Family bathroom

  • Level access from the landing via a doorway 74cm wide.
  • 2.20m from master bedroom and just 80cm from twin bedroom.
  • Non-slip grey floor tiles, with cotton bath mat (changed between every set of guests)
  • White P-shaped bath 55cm high with hot/cold taps.
  • Electric shower with adjustable shower head over bath. Glass shower screen
  • White ceramic hand basin over storage cupboard 88cm high, with hot and cold mixer tap.
  • Armitage Shanks toilet, height of seat 42cm.
  • No alarm/pull cords, grab rails or supports within this bathroom.
  • Velux rooflight window enabling natural light to enter the bathroom
  • 3 x LED spotlights in the ceiling for additional light.

The games room

  • The games room is situated in an adjacent barn, a short distance away (approximately, 10m) from the driveway gates
  • Access to the games room is via a permanent, concrete slope, with a fairly steep incline and through a door 81cm wide.
  • Comfy seating with arms can be found inside; all seats' distance from floor are 45cm.
  • There are two barstools with a seat height of 75cm and one with a seat height of 62cm
  • The flooring is laid with grey slate flagstones
  • Overhead lighting is provided by 4 hanging strip LED lights, which can be individually switched on and off
  • Natural light floods in via 3 picture windows
  • Being an external barn, with single skin walls, it is worth noting that this barn can get a bit chilly at certain times of the year.  Guests are advised to bring an extra layer of warm clothing to enjoy this facility to its fullest.


The llamas

We want to ensure that all our guests, regardless of their physical limitations, have the opportunity to enjoy the unique experience of meeting our llamas - should they wish to! 

Please note that our llamas are housed in four fields, all of which have hilly and uneven terrain that can become wet, muddy, and slippery, especially during inclement weather. However, we firmly believe that physical challenges should not be a barrier. If you would like to meet the llamas, we are committed to working with you to provide the best possible experience possible. We will make every effort to accommodate your needs and ensure your safety and enjoyment whilst interacting with our friendly llamas.

  • We can supply written information in large print.  Please ask.
  • Owing to the rural location, mobile telephone reception is limited, however we provide free, superfast broadband through which wi-fi calling is possible for seamless use of your mobile phone whilst at the property.
  • This cottage is no smoking, no vaping and pet free
